A single championship race scattered with false starts, "racing incidents" and some great driving, produced plenty of excitement throughout the field, and a new PBMW lap record. Local drivers Tim Wilson and Mike Tovey went into the weekend as firm favourites, and didn't disappoint in qualifying Wilson took pole with a new PBMW qualifying record, Robin Welsh split the local drivers taking second ahead of Tovey leaving the championship leader Liam Crilly, and contenders RPM Driver Robert Smith, and Nick Barke chasing precious points from behind A spectacular 41 cars took to the grid for the race, an extended spell with the red lights on caused some amusement at the front of the grid, with the front 3 rows dancing on and off the spot. Several drivers going early and being judged as gaining an unfair advantage, thus declared their starts as a false start The first entry into Quarry saw Welsh leading Smith (RPM) with Wilson and Tovey in tow. None of the drivers aware that Welsh had been penalized for a false start battled hard and on the edge, changing positions all the way to the chequered flag. With Smith (RPM) taking his first win of the season with half a lap to go from 3rd, and putting him back on top of the championship points. Wilson set the new lap record As usual, PBMW produced excitment and battles throughout the field, aswell as a few thrills and spills Warren Gazzard (GAZ Shocks) proved that PBMW is equally about the driver as the car, and after a full days tuition was awarded driver of the day after his best drive of the year, keeping it consistent and steady, finishing in 12th. A race long battle between Ian Shepherd and Neil Adams, produced some close racing with the 2 swapping positions on a number of occasions. Sadly the battle came to ahead with a contact into camp on the last lap resulting in Shepherd being left on the infield and Adams nursing a puncture. Further down the field, after a poor qualifying Ian Berry and RPM Driver Jimmy Cuthbert had a hard battle, making their way through the field together. After 8 laps Cuthbert managed to get through the wide E30 of Berry, before his race was cut short at Tower, being taped onto the front bumper of Kevin Welsh, then being T Boned and pushed down the back straight sideways. Drivers were offered the opportunity of a second race on the day with a non championship all comers race. With a field comprising of all but 3 cars under the BMW marquee. After a restart resulting from a spinning Kevin Denwood coming across the startline, to be collected by Ian. The drivers settled into a close and clean race. The top spot went to the Cosworth of Colin tester, who was followed home by the M5 of Roger Kneebone, the E30 325 of Rob Sadler. The next round of the Production BMW Championship will be at Cadwell Park on 21/22 August. |
